Convict Notes

Jean Jarvis or M'Williams, wife of John M'Williams, weaver, Main Street, Gorbals, and Margaret McWilliams, her daughter, accused of resetting a silver watch, which had been stolen from the house of William Waddell, weaver, pleaded Not Guilty. The Jury found the mother Guilty, but the libel against the daughter Not Proven. Lord Gillies then animadverted on the enormity of the crime of resetting stolen goods from young persons, and considered her crime by far greater than that which they have already, at this Court, pronounced the last sentence of the law. Sentence of transportation for 14 years was then passed on her. Caledonian Mercury, 24 Sept 1821. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Colonial Secretary Index.
