A Second Indictment. —Henry Jeffs was again charged with breaking into the premises of Wm. Cannon, and stealing a quantity of boots and shoes. Mr. Dennis appeared for the prosecution. William Cannon stated that his warehouse was broken into on the night of the 3d of December and robbed of quantity of boots and shoes. Joseph Ball produced a pair of boots, which Cannon identified as part of his property. Cannon continued. The entrance was effected through a sash window 30 feet from the ground. had evidently been reached by ladder. About one and twenty pairs of boots and shoes altogether, were taken away. George Hornet lives in Much Park Street, Coventry On the 9th December, prisoner offered him a pair of boots for sale— those produced. Witness declined to buy them, but detained them, and gave them up to Parker, the police constable of Coventry. John Parker, police constable of Coventry, delivered the boots to Ball. He Thomas Smith lives at Coventry. Was an inmate at the station-house, at Coventry, in the same cell as the prisoner. He said he had given a wrong name, and he thought it would go against him that he and another robbed the prosecutor's house that thought he should get over it he could get the other boots —five and twenty pairs—from the Green Man, for Cannon was a man just set up in business, and not in the Association. Witness had been committed in a matter affiliation. Prisoner protested that statement was false; that Smith had advised him to get an attorney, and told him if be had 6s. 8d. he would get one for him; that he had himself been convicted of felony, for which he had twelve months, and that he would have been transported, but for his counsel. Smith admitted that he had been convicted of felony, but had only three months, and had no counsel. He had made no proposal about an attorney. The Jury found the prisoner guilty, and the Recorder sentenced both Jeffs and Newman to be Transported for Ten Years. Northampton Mercury, Saturday 11 January 1845
