William Jenkins was one of four men who were sentenced to death for stealing two heifers. One of the prisoners had a petition on his behalf, and his sentence was commuted to transportation for 7 years. --------------------------------------------------- National Archives. Criminl Petitions. HO 17/15/341821 Apr 26; 1821 May 16 Prisoner name: Edward Bury. Prisoner occupation: Former soldier and then gamekeeper. Court and date of trial: Monmouth Assizes 1821. Crime: Stealing two heifers. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated (Outcome): To be transported for seven years. Pardon prepared June 1821. Petitioner(s): Prisoner. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Family dependants; distressed; first offence. Other papers: Letter from Mr Justice Park advising that four men were capitally convicted at Monmouth: the prisoner, John Phillips, John Mason and William Jenkins. Prisoner advised authorities of planned escape by other three, asks for these three prisoners to be sent immediately to hulks and mitigation of prisoner's sentence.
