National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/5/43 1836 Feb Prisoner name: William Jennings. Prisoner age: 21. Court and date of trial: Kent Quarter Sessions at Maidstone 7 January 1836. Crime: Stealing a piece of canvas, value 4s. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character bad, twice before convicted and once in prison. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Two petitions from William Jennings (the prisoner's father) one of which is undersigned by 20 inhabitants of Chatham [Kent] and the other is undersigned by eight inhabitants of Chatham [Kent]. W Hughes. Grounds for clemency: The trivial nature of the offence; the prisoner's father's distress; prisoner has a wife and young family who have been left destitute; his neighbours vouch for his honesty. Other papers: Covering letter from George Byng MP. Additional Information: Ordered to Fortitude hulk.
