Convict Notes
25/7/1828 Evening Mail London, England: SUMMER ASS/ZBS. WORCESTBR. July 22. John Cheese, aged 33, was indicted for assaulting and ravishing Ann Ridley, on the evening of the 14th May last. Ann Ridley, a plain-looking girl, with an impediment in her speech, stated that she was 16 years of age ; that she lived at Stourbridge, in the county, and worked at a carpet-facgtory at Kidderminster in the morning, and returning in the evening. The distance is about four miles........ William Turner, the constable who apprehended the prisoner, stated that the prisoner in the most disgusting manner admitted that he had been guilty of the offence.......... The Jury brought in a verdict of guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, because they beklieved the prisoner was not aware of the punishment that awaited the commission of such a crime. The Judge then proceeded to address the prisoner on the enormity of the crime of which he had been convicted, and concluded by pronouncing sentence of death on him. John Cheese was listed as 32 years old on arrival in VDL. His native place was Rochford. John was 5'5½" tall, brown hair, thin on forehead, brown eyes, little finger left hand deformed, scar left side of neck. Wife & 3 children at Stanford Beauchamp near Bromyard. I worked last for Mr Smith. 1830-33 Musters: Public Works. 17/10/1834: John Cheese died at the Colonial Hospital, Hobart, aged 38 years. Listed as as invalid in 1834.
