Convict Notes
He is the brother of George Copas who he was transported with and Henry Copas who was transported on 'Speke' in 1826
John Coops is actually John Copas, brother of George and Henry Copas, who were all transported to NSW. John was 32 years old on arrival, could read and write, protestant, 5'2 3/4" tall, dark sallow complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, mole inside left breast. 1837: General Return of Convicts in NSW; undertaking Government Works in the Illawarra district (listed as Copers). 11/12/1841: TOL Illawarra. 30/9/1847: CP 18/1/1847: Married Mary Carey at St Michael's Church of England, Wollongong. John became a cab proprietor (as did George) and bought land in Wollongong for £230 in 1855. 1858: Lived in Crown St. Wollongong. 15/12/1867: Mary Copas nee Carey, died aged 50. 25/3/1851: John died aged 88.
