Convict Notes
John Crawford was sentenced to death at the July 1786 Old Bailey Sessions for stealing three guineas and eight shillings sixpence. The victim had been drinking at the Running Horse public house in Tottenham Court Road when Crawford and another man offered to walk him home around midnight. Finding his landlord would not let him in he took the two men to the Red Lion public house, Piccadilly, and bought them drinks. As he dozed over his drink the man felt Crawford cut his purse and take the money which was found on him after a strip search. In January 1787 he was reprieved to transportation for life and was later sent to the Thames hulk Stanislaus, age given as 46. on 16 November 1789 he was embarked on the Surprize transport. Crawford lived quietly in the colony and was buried at Sydney on 24 May, 1798 (aged about 57). (Source: a photocopy of page 226 of a book on The Second Fleet 1790; author not shown).
