Sentence; 14 years. ** Age; 16 years Disease; Acute Rhinmatismus ** [ rheumatism - any disease marked by inflammation and pain in the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue, especially rheumatoid arthritis] Date; 12 December 1830 Surgeon's Notes; This boy, had slept in the wind of the Hatchway for several nights, he complained this morning of pain, stiffness and swelling in the right knee, extending to the ankle joint. 13 Dec - Pain and swelling still the same, is unable to work or stand on the limb ...... He became gradually worse during the night and about one o'clock in the morning Discharged; DEAD; 15 or 16 December 1830

JOHN HAYS was indicted for stealing, on the 29th of March , 1 handkerchief, value 2s., the goods of Hugh Leslie , from his person . CHARLES HERDSFIELD . On the 29th of March about one o'clock, I followed the prisoner from the Mansion-house, and saw him put his hand into the pocket of a gentleman who turned into the Bank ; the prosecutor then came by, and he took his handkerchief - an apple-woman called out; he then threw it behind him - I laid hold of him, and called the prosecutor. HUGH LESLIE . I was near the Bank; I felt nothing at my pocket - an apple-woman called me; I missed my handkerchief - I found it on the pavement; I gave the prisoner into custody. Prisoner's Defence. Two boy s were walking behind the gentleman; one of them took the handkerchief and threw it behind - I caught it in my hand, and threw it on the ground; another lad was taken and was in Newgate, his friends have been drinking with the officer till two o'clock in the morning, to make it up. CHARLES HERDSFIELD . I saw him take the handkerchief; another boy was taken with him, but the bill was thrown out. GUILTY . Aged 15. - Transported for Seven Years .
