Convict Notes
There are at least 4 John Jones that were transported on sailings of the Aurora. The NSW Convict Death Register 1826-1879 (page 111) has an entry for a John Jones per the Aurora who died on Norfolk Island on 26 July 1852.
He was assigned to the Van Diemen's Land Company in 1839 to work at the Hampshire/ Surrey Hills Establishment. His Police Number was 885. He gained his Ticket of Leave 2/7/1840 and Certificate of Freedom 20/10/1841
John Jones was convicted at Surrey 20 Oct 1834 of robbery - a coat from his master, Stephen Anderson. 7yrs. Transportation on 'Aurora' to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). (Note more than one John Jones on this ship.) Native Place: Leicester. Single; Protestant; can read & write. 21 yrs of age. Labourer. Sister Ann at Chester, a servant with her uncle.
