John Laffin was transported for desertion from the 63rd Regiment. He came from County Down, Ireland. John is described as: 5'4 1/4" tall, pockpitted, dark grey eyes, dark brown hair, single, Heart and dart on inside of left arm, J L E P and tree on inside of right arm. His conduct record is full of punishments, lashes and cells on bread and water for misconduct, causing riotus behaviour, insolence etc. 16/5/1834: COF. This from the Colonial Times, Hobart 20/5/1834; John Laffin, a whaler, who had signed articles to serve Dr. Imlay at the ensuing whaling season, engaged to go to another establishment in South Australia, in breach of his original contract, was brought up on warrant and ordered to 30 days to the house of correction and kept to hard labour. The only other reference was from the Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston., 6/9/1865; John Laffin Esq., Freshwater Point, Tasmania, will auction any cattle that stray onto his property.
