1823 Journey. SHIP News.— The ship Woodman, Captain Ford, arrived from Ireland, via Rio de Janiero, on Wednesday evening the 25th ult. She brings 94 female convicts, in good health; together with 8 children. Including children, there are 38 free passengers, by this opportunity, mostly destined for Van Diemen's Land. Convict Notes
Born: Matlock, Derby. John Marsden absconded sometime in 1823 and returned to England. By 1825 he was captured and was returned to VDL on the Woodman, arriving in 1826. Having been tried at Derby, thought he might safely set up as horse dealer in London, where he was detected. He was sent straight to Sydney, arriving there in later 1826 on the Chapman. He next appears in NSW Colonial Secretary papers for Moreton Bay, 1838-1839, Reel A.10, so he probably was sent there from Sydney. He received a TL in 1838 and appears in the NSW Goal Description and Entrance Book (Sydney Goal), for that year. At Moreton Bay: Sent there in 1826, described as: 37, 5'5½" tall, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes. Occupation: Horse dealer. Listed as: In the Ordinary service of the Crown. 22/6/1838: Returned to Sydney. Also listed as per 'Chapman'. 10/9/1838: TOL Parramatta. (Born 1795, listed as a groom). 21/12/1839: TOL Passport - Allowed to pass from Windsor to Sydney in the service of Mr. John Booth for twelve months, listed as per 'Chapman'. 11/9/1840: TOL Passport - Allowed to travel in the districts of Penrith, Windsor and Sydney in the employ of Mr. #### Pye for twelve months, Parramatta Bench, listed as per 'Chapman'. 5/3/1877: John Marsden died at Tottington, Shire of St. Arnaud, Victoria - died of old age and exhaustion, aged 78, occupation: a trapper. Born Lancaster, England, over 20 years in Victoria.
