Convict Notes
John was sentenced to Moreton Bay, from where he managed to escape. The newspaper records a variety of names for him in the account. John Magoe, a painter and glazier, was indicted for an assault and highway robbery, on the person of J. Kidd on the 10th of May last. It was proved that the prosecutor and his wife were walking along George'-street, about seven o'clock in the evening:, that a snatch was made at his wife's scarf, near the corner of the Lumber yard— on which the prisoner was taken in charge —when some other men came round and rescued him. One of the mob then tripped up the husband, snatched the watch from his fob, and took some money out of his pockets. In consequence of information given by H. S. Fallon, a watch maker, the prisoner, was taken up, and committed for trial. The prisoner had brought the watch to Fallon to be repaired, who on seeing it, knew it to be Kidd's watch, to whom he gave information accordingly. The Jury found the prisoner guilty of larceny. The Australian, 5 June 1829. SUPREME COURT.— (Criminal side) SATURDAY. JUDGMENTS. The three learned Judges sat together this day to pass sentence, .J. Magee, larceny— seven years transportation. .There were fifty prisoners sentenced on the whole — after which the entire, or a greater part, being in irons, were conveyed back to the gaol, in charge of a numerous body of constables.
