Family connections for John (Pentley) are: PENTLEY John (Pentley aka Oglevie) was born about 1781. He was tried for stealing clothes at Durham Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years, held on a hulk (stated age=18), & arrived in NSW as a convict on 19 10 1819 after a voyage of 4months on ATLAS. He was an emamcipist when he married thirdly, at given age27, Charlotte (Day-Bishop/Shrimpton, her third (3of4) marriage) emancipist on 22 12 1828 at St Johns CofE Pitt Town-recorded as (Pintla).He, as (Pentley alias Ogilby), was tried for stealing a cow & bull, on 3 1 1832, of Henry (Baldwin) of Richmond in May 1832. He was recorded in 1835 as sentence expired & required to leave Norfolk Island on ISABELLA, probably on 29 4 1835. He, as (Pentley), was Free by Servitude when tried for stealing a money order of ??? (Fawke-found dead) at Windsor on 15 6 1842 & sentenced to 12months in irons. He died on 22 4 1843 age about55 (stated age=42) as a prisoner in Parramatta Hospital. [Some details taken from this Website] Charlotte (Day-mother=Mary (Bishop)-was born in June 1792 on Norfolk Island. She married firstly (1of4) James Crabb) on 11 3 1811 at St Johns Cofe Parramatta. She married secondly (2of4) Richard (Shrimpton his second marriage) on 9 8 1819 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & lived at Wilberforce & produced 4children. She was recorded living at Wilberforce with 3of her children in 1828. She married/had a relationship fourthly with Frederick (Allsop) & maybe produced a child-although the child may been fathered by John (Pentley). She died on 5 9 1851 age about60 mother of perhaps 8children at Kurrajong & was buried, as (Pentley), at St Peters CofE Richmond - a memorial plaque was placed here in 1993 commemorating her mother. Details of Charlotte (Day)s family are given in entry for Samuel (Day ALEXANDER 1787) on this Website. Charlotte (Day-Bishop/Shrimpton) & John (Pentley) produced at least 1child:: 1.Susannah Jane (Pentley) was born on 31 7 1829 & baptised on 3 8 1834 age5+ at St Peters CofE Richmond. Norfolk Island Commandant's orders for 31 March 1835 state that Pentley's colonial sentence had expired, and that he was to leave Norfolk Island on the next sailing of the Isabella. This was probably on 29 April 1835. (Sources: NSW Archives 4/2244.1, Aaron Price's history of Norfolk Island)

John Pentley did not live the life of a converted man. His criminal activities continued in the colony. Sydney Gazette Sat 19 May 1832 p.3... John Pentley, alias John Ogilby, was indicted for stealing one cow and one bull, the property of Henry Baldwin, at Richmond, on the 3rd of January last. (possibly this was the period when Charlotte was with Allsop??). Clerk of the Peace Registers Registers of criminal cases tried at Windsor, 1839-1843 John Pentley, free by servitude, Atlas Committed Windsor 7 Jun 1842 by J. North Esq for larceny. Witnesses for the crown: James Mahon, Thos. N. Fisher, Edward Coulan, Henry Mace Tried 15 Jun and found guilty sentenced to 12 calendar months in irons. Sydney Herald Tue 21 Jun 1842 p.2... John Pentley was next given in charge of a jury, accused of having illegally appropriated to his own use an order for £6 sterling, belonging to a person of the name of Fawke, a ticket-of-leave holder, who was found dead in his bed. The prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to he worked in irons for one year. John died whilst incarcerated. Death Registered: Pently, John, Atlas, 42, 22 Apr 1843, hospital, Parramatta, from the iron gang.
Initially, at Parramatta, on 18th March, 1811 aged 19, Charlotte married James Crabb (73rd Regiment, 1810). They had 2 children, Alexander 1813 and Mary 1814. James was then transferred to Annapoora, Ceylon where he was colour sergeant. He died there on 12th February 1818. Charlotte, now a widow, with 2 young children, married Richard Shrimpton (Second Fleet Convict, 1790, "Scarborough"). The couple married 9th August 1819 at Parramatta. They had 4 children; Edward 1819, Charles 1822, Leah 1824 and Richard 1826. Richard (snr), died in 1827. Once again Charlotte was a widow, with now an even bigger family. Her marriage to John Pentley took place at Pitt Town in 1828. The couple do not seem to appear on the census... However some of the boys do. Alexander Crabb [Ref C2750 page 106] aged 14 with James Martin at Parramatta. Edward Shrimpton [Ref S0784 page 337] aged 9 and Charles Shrimpton [S0785 page 337] aged 6½, both at the Male Orphanage, Cabramatta. John and Charlotte had a daughter Susannah Jane in 1829 and there was another daughter Chaorlotte who may or may not have been Pentley's child, but is normally recognised as a child of Frederick Allsop. Frederick was the son of William Allsop (Second Fleet Convict, 1790, "Surprize") and Mary Atherley (Convict, 1808, "Aeolus") and had a defacto relationship with Charlotte Pentley.
In 1828, John married Charlotte Shrimpton (nèe Bishop), at Pitt Town. John was by this time about 41 and Charlotte 36. Charlotte was the daughter of Samuel Day (First Fleet Convict, 1788, "Alexander") and Mary Bishop (First Fleet Convict, 1788, "Lady Penryhn"). Charlotte had been married twice before she married John.
