Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, May 3, 1831. THE Tickets of Leave granted to the following Persons have been cancelled, for the reasons set against their names respectively, viz.— John Probyn, alias John Jones, Daniel Probyn, Guildford (6), for being found secreted in a dwelling house at night. Sydney Herald, 9 May 1831.

Bristol General Gaol Delivery. John Probyn, otherwise John Dyniel Jonas Probyn, aged 19, was tried one of three, who were discovered by many of Ike Bedminster patrole about three o’clock in the morning of January lurking in the garden of Mr. Charles Hare, on the New Cut, near Hill’s Bridge, (from whence the other two escaped), having broken into the housekeeper's room, through window, of the Rectory-house on Redcliff-hill, occupied by Mrs. Philippa Wbisb, mother of the Rev. M. R. Wbisb, and stolen two pair of smallclothes, several hat-bands, scarfs, table-cloths, and other articles, which were found in bundle and on the ground from whence the prisoner and his accomplices started, and now identified by the Rev. Gentleman and two of his mother's servants, as their property. In day-light afterwards Mr. C. Hare traced footsteps in the snow, and found, near where the bundle bad been picked up, a small double-headed crow-bar, which exactly fitted the fractures made to the window-frame and shutters of the Rectory-house. After laborious and patient investigation, during which the prisoner made numerous essays to shake the credibility of the witnesses in trifling points, the Jury retired for about half an hour, and then returned a verdict of Guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy.
