Convict Notes
John Roberts was born in County Tipperary, Ireland. At the Northumberland Quarter Sessions, on 13 January 1820, he was tried for the crime of Larceny, and was sentenced to Transportation for 7 years. He was transported on the Shipley (3) which arrived at New South Wales on 26 September 1820. The ship's indent recorded: John Roberts, aged 25 years, born at Tipperary, Labourer, Height 5 feet 8 1/2 inches; Complexion: Fair pale; Hair: Light brown; Eyes: Blue; In the colony, John Roberts was transported to Newcastle per 'Mermaid' in July 1821; listed at Newcastle in the 1822 General Muster; removed from Newcastle to Port Macquarie per 'Mermaid' in Feb 1823; listed as Scourger at Port Macquarie in the 1825 General Muster; at Moreton Bay with a 3 year colonial sentence in the 1828 Census. One copy of the 1828 census has the added notation "Dead, Oct'r 1829", however this would refer to the other convict on the Shipley, also known as John Roberts, who was living in Sydney. NOTE: There were two convicts with the name John Roberts on the Shipley in 1820, one born in Tipperary, Ireland, the other born in Peckham, England.
