At Northampton assizes, ... Thomas Cox, Robert Henson, John Sewell, and Joseph Westley, for sheep stealing, ... also received sentence death, but were reprieved before the Judge left the town. Cambridge Chronicle, 15 Mar 1822.
28 Feb 1830: Application for Permission to marry - John SEWELL (transported per 'Arab') to Elizabeth LAW (transported per 'Mermaid'). Approved.(Tas Archives 45/1/1). 6 June 1831: Marriage - John Sewell, widower to Elizabeth Law, widow, at Parish of Richmond, Sorell (County of Buckingham) by banns with the consent of the Lt. Governor. Both signed with their 'mark'. Witnesses - Peter McDonald & Catherine Parsons, both of Richmond. (ref: Regd 36/1/2 no. 1743)
John SEWELL was convicted at Northampton, England on 2 March 1822 for stealing sheep. Gaol Report: "behaved very bad, former connections are supposed to be bad". Life sentence. Hulk Report: "orderly". Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Arab" arriving 6 Nov 1822. Aged 25 yrs; married man - wife and 2 children at Warrington; farmer's labourer; 5'8" height. VDL: assignments in the Colony. 1826: a Constable. Several notes of misconduct including harbouring convicts. 1 Oct 1834: Committed for trial. Not Guilty. 21 July 1837: Committed for trial. Not Guilty. Conditional Pardon, no. 114 approved.
