Two voyages with transport convicts to Australia: 1845/1846: 1847: 248 male people (known as "exiles" landed at Point Henry, Geelong, Victoria and 1 went on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Queen Victoria had decreed that all of these men (many of them youths from Parkhurst, Isle of Wight) should be treated as "free" upon arrival (significant backlash to transported criminals at this time).

John SMITH was convicted at the CCC, London, together with William Wynne and Thomas Baker, on 16 June 1845 for stealing from the person - a book. Smith and Wynne both sentenced to 10yrs transportation (both had previous convictions)and sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Joseph Somes' arriving 20 May 1846. (Baker sentenced to 6mths imprisonment). Aged 27yrs; plasterer; 5'4 1/4"; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes. Last worked in Bayswater Native place of birth: St. Martin's in the Fields, London. No names of relatives are listed on the Indent. 18mths Probation Period. Assignments at Hobart, Ross, Clarence Plains, Sandy Bay, Tunbridge, Launceston, Paterson's Plains. 24 Nov 1851: Ticket of Leave granted.
