ADM 101/42/8B/11841 Folio 1: Title page; A copy of the daily sick book of Her Majesty's chartered convict ship Layton employed in conveying prisoners from England to Hobart Town between the 9th March and the 6th September 1841. Alexander McKechnie MD Surgeon Superintendent. Folios 24-27: John Smith, aged 26, Convict; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 21 May 1841, at sea. Died, 24 May 1841. On the 14th May he was on the sick list with headache, loss of appetite and constipated bowels which was treated with blisters and purgatives. He was discharged 19 May. On 21 May he complained of headache, giddiness, cough, uneasiness of epigastrium, thirst, loss of appetite, pain of limbs and general debility. He also suffered stricture and a catheter was used to draw off urine. A post mortem was carried out and the findings are noted.
