John SNAPE was convicted at Lancaster, England on 13 Jan 1830 for steaing - a shawl. Convicted once before and bad connections. 14 yr transportation sentence. Hulk report: "orderly". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Southworth' arriving 19 Oct 1830. Single man; labourer; aged 20 yrs; 5'2 1/4" height; brown hair; brown eyes. Colony of VDL: Assigned to work services. Several records of misconduct and punishments. Absconded. 1835: Sent to Port Arthur penal settlement. 22 March 1839: Ticket of Leave granted. 21 Jan 1847: Certificate of Freedom issued. (N.B. There is another person named John SNAPE, a convict in the Colony abt the same time)
