Text type Trial account Defendants JOHN HANNING Offences Theft > Pocketpicking Session Date 20th August 1838 Reference Number t18380820-1807 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 1807. JOHN HANNING was indicted for stealing, on the 12th of July, 1 handkerchief, value 2s., the goods of James Peters, from his person. JAMES PETERS . On the 12th of July, between four and five o'clock, I was walking along the Strand, towards Charing-cross-when I got to Somerset-house I felt a twitch—I turned, and saw the prisoner with my blue silk handkerchief in his hand—he was in the act of putting it into his trowsere pocket, and he ran off—I took him—this is it. Prisoner. I did it for want. GUILTY .* Aged 17.— Transported for Ten Years.
