John Thompson was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 29th Sep 1818 and arriving 4th Mar 1819 with 160 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

February 3rd 1823, PA Mulgrave JP, John Thomson/Surrey/58/7 convict employed in the Government brick fields charged with stealing a tin dish the property of a bag and two legs of mutton the property of George Pyle on Saturday night last also with breaking prison plea – guilty guilty of prison breaking, not guilty of stealing George Pyle sworn saith, the tin dish now produced was in a tub at the back of the house where I lodge in Launceston on Saturday evening last I found it on Sunday morning in the house of a man named Matthew Keane, the canvas bag was in the fowl house near the tub, and two legs of mutton in the water shed late on Saturday evening, I have not seen the bag or mutton since, I could not swear to the mutton or the bag if I were to see them, when I saw the dish at Matthew Keane's on Sunday morning, Keanes informed me that the Prisoner had just brought it into his house, it was my property George Pyle (signed) The prisoner in his defence says that he found the dish with some meat in the swamps. 50 lashes and work one month in the gaol gang.
