Convict Notes

1832, 4 January: John Johnson, 18, a compositor, was convicted at Stafford for larceny - stealing a watch. He was admitted to the Ganymede prison hulk at Woolwich and was sent from on 11 February for transportation (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849). 1832: On arrival in VDL, he was 19 and single, and was assigned to Mr Melville (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON27-1-5$init=CON27-1-5). His VDL Conduct Record runs to three pages and is heavy with entries about "misconduct" and the subsequent punishments. It appears he started work in the Government Printery or equivalent but by 1845 he was on chain gangs and, that year, he was sent to Port Arthur (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON32-1-4$init=CON32-1-4p20). 1849, 1 May: He received a Ticket of Leave but this was later revoked when he absconded. 1857, 23 December: Another ToL was issued to him (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON34-1-3$init=CON34-1-3P474). Note: Can find no record of him gaining his freedom by servitude!
