Convict Notes
There is some confusion over the age and precise birth of Ambrose Jones in Birmingham (Warwickshire). On arrival in Port Phillip in 1849 his age is stated as 24 - Public Record Office of Victoria, Index to Assisted to British Immigration (...and therefore born in 1825). His Gravestone epitaph in Ballaarat however implies he was born in 1820 (died in 1897 aged 77, so born in 1820). My UK Research has revealed Ambrose was baptised on 27th June 1825 (Father Charles, and Mother Ann). The latter were married in 1816 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. There is no record of the "Charles Jones" family in the UK 1841 Census of the Birmingham area - though there is an Ann Jones family residing in St Nicholas Parish, Worcester (mother Ann, and daughters Ann and Emma). Ambrose Jones also resides in the Parish and lodging at a Blacksmiths (Henry Evans : Butts Insull Buildings). Ambrose would have been 16 years of age but is registered as 20 years of age. In unravelling this conundrum, it is clear that Ambrose named his first child after his younger sister (Emma), his second child after his father (Charles), and his third child after his mother (Mary Ann).
In addition, Ambrose is buried in Ballaarat "New" Centery with wife Mary (Roman Catholic Area A, Section 17, Grave 6). Along side this is a grave simply marked "Jones".
Ambrose was sentenced to 7 yrs Transportation for stealing a coat belonging to Elizabeth Henley whilst attending the Birmingham Steeple Chase Races (as reported in the Birmingham Journal on Saturday March 13th 1847). He was held at Pentonville Prison (June 1847), before sailing on the Eden (departing Plymouth on October 5th 1848). It appears he had his sentence commuted / pardoned ....perhaps because of his skill or profession. Ambrose became a successful businessman in operating a haulage business between Geelong/Melbourne and Ballaarat, and was acknowledged as one of Ballaarats' Pioneers (his photo is included in a portrait compilation that was hung in the Ballaarat Mechanics Institute ( https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/540fc6a62162f10afc22e8d9 ). Ambrose had 12 children in total : Emma (1851), Charles (1852), Mary Ann (1855), Esther (1856), George (1858), Bridget (1861), Richard (1861), Merinda (1862), Ellen (1863), Ambrose (1867), William (1869), and Catherine (1871). Kevin ...you're obviously descended from Catherine ....who married Michael James Egan.
Ambrose Jones is not listed on Tasmanian Convict Records so he was obviously disembarked at Port Phillip. He should be listed on the NSW Gov. Records, but it is not available online at the moment. 1850: Married Mary and had 8 children - Ambrose, Catherine, Charles, Emma, Ellen, Esther, Richard and Wiliam.
