N/B/: There are two persons named "John JONES" on this voyage of the ship 'China' 1846. This John was tried at the CCC, London. John JONES(identifier 1) was convicted at the Central Criminal Court, London on 27 Oct 1845 for burglary and stealing wearing apparel. Second conviction. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Lane (Tasmania) per the ship 'China' arriving first at Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales) on 16 May 1846. Transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Pestongee Bonanjee' on 19 May 1847. Aged 19yrs; a plasterer; single man; 5'2 1/4" height; Protestant; can read & write; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native place: St.Pancreas, London Colonies: 18 mths Probation Period Several records of misconduct and being absent without leave. Extension of sentence and hard labour, in chains. 25 March 1851: Ticket of Leave granted. 21 June 1853: Conditional Pardon approved.
