By 1869 Joseph and Ann’s second son, Joseph Henry Jones had become known as Joseph Henry Hardy. It’s not known yet whether Joseph sr and Ann were also known as Hardy.

National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/67/291826 Mar 1 individual petition (Matilda Jones, prisoner's sister) on behalf of Joseph Jones convicted at Oxford Assizes in 1826 of theft of a small quantity of leather belonging to William Grace. Grounds for clemency: Father died when he was twelve months old. Mother left with five infant children. She died five years ago leaving children parentless and in a friendless situation. Convict obtained work in the glove manufacturing industry in Worcester but went to Oxford to look for work when there was a shortage. Sorrowful and contrite. Two former employers prepared to take him back. Initial sentence: seven years' transportation. ML30
