Convict Notes

Richard Jones, a corn broker, was indicted for the wilful murder of James McMahon, at the Mayor's stoney on the 6th October last, by wilfully aiding and abetting others in the perpetration. This case has been already before the public since last Assizes, when another person was convicted. The trial occupied a considerable time, and the Jury eventually returned a verdict of guilty, on the testimony of James M‘lnerney, an accomplice, partially corroborated by others. The verdict was accompanied by a recommendation to mercy, on the plea that the prisoner was not actually concerned in the murder, but only a silent spectator at a respectful distance. His Lordship pronounced sentence of death for Thursday, but promised to represent the case to Government. .. Limerick Chronicle, 15 March 1826. CITY LIMERICK CONVICTIONS. Richard Jones, murder—sentence of death recorded. Limerick Chronicle, 22 March 1826. A King's Messenger arrived here yesterday morning, at four o'clock, with a respite for Richard Jones, under sentence of death in the City Jail, for the murder of James McMahon, at Thomond-Gate, in the affray with the corn brokers.
