Joseph MANWARING was convicted at Manchester, England on 24 June 1844 for stealing a blanket. Previous offence of stealing a wheelbarrow. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'William Jardine' arriving 20 Nov 1844. Ship surgeon's report: "very good". Married man, 3 children; aged 33 yrs; trade - a baker; 5'6" height; fair complexion' brown hair' Hazel eyes; Protestant; can read & write. Native place - Manchester, England. Wife - Elizabeth Sisters - Mary & Jane. (Jane, in Canada) (ref. Convict indent record) VDL: 15 month probation period.
