Henry Wellesley Medical Journal Case No; 3 Ophthalmia. Woolwich 22 September 1835. Aged; 42 years old Remarks; A miserable old woman that has been afflicted with Scrofula from her youth & has been for the last 6 months subject to inflammation of the left eye..... Discharged; quite well 30 September 1835. 1835 - 25 December 1835. Re-admitted. ATROPHIA Died; 27 December 1835 - The body was not examined Scrofula - Scrofula is a condition in which the bacteria that causes tuberculosis causes symptoms outside the lungs. This usually takes the form of inflamed and irritated lymph nodes in the neck. Ophthalmia - phthalmia (also called ophthalmitis) is inflammation of the eye. It results in congestion of the eyeball, often eye-watering, redness and swelling, itching and burning, and a general feeling of irritation under the eyelids. Ophthalmia can have different causes, such as infection from bacteria, viruses, fungi, .....




Mary KEELING was convicted at Lancaster and given a life sentence. Transported to New South Wales, Australia per the 'Henry Wellesley' 1835/36. Mary was aged 42 years. Worker in a cotton factory. She died during the voyage on 27 Dec 1835. (ref. Ship surgeon's journal)
