Belfast Quarter Sessions Betty Kelly, for stealing, at Belfast, on 8h May, piece of baize, the property of Henry Lattimore, Donegall-street. Prisoner, a shrivelled  old hag, stated, with the coolest effrontery, by way of defence, that the prosecutor offered her the baize, to induce her to submit to his wishes. The Court was convulsed with laughter, at this unblushing plea. Guilty. The prisoner was proved to be an incorrigible thief,  and was sentenced to seven years’ transportation. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 10 July 1839.
