Catharine KELLY was convicted at Kilkenny, Ireland for burglary and robbery. Previous conviction. 10yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Blackfriar' arriving 29 May 1851. Aged 23yrs; single; country servant; 5'5 1/4"; can read; Roman Catholic. Father - James Kelly. Farmer, but now in a Workhouse. Mother - Margaret KELLY (nee O'Neil) - also convicted of an offence and transported to VDL on same voyage. Mother's young daughter, Ann also accompanied her. Children were required to be placed in St. Johns Orphanage and Ann was admitted 3 June 1851 and discharged to her mother Margaret on 7 Jul 1854. Margaret married William Atkinson (also transported) and Ann then took on his surname. Two other siblings at Kilkenny. Native place - Kilkenny Several assignments of service work in Colony. 7 Feb 1853 - Married James Burton. James died 6 Aug 1853. 22 May 1854 - Married James Oswall. 15 Aug 1854 - Ticket of Leave granted. 5 Nov 1854 - Out after hours. 3mths hard labour. Ticket of Leave revoked. 23 Feb 1855 - Larceny. Discharged and returned to service of the Crown. 22 May 1855 - Ticket of Leave approved. 28 Apr 1857 - Conditional Pardon approved. 13 Sept 1870 - Supreme Court Hobart - Receiving stolen property. Tried under name "Catharine KENNEDY". Discharged. 2 Oct 1883 - Drunk & incapable. 7 days hard labour.
