On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. Sydney Gazette, Sat 7 Jun 1817. -------------------------------------------------- Convicts who sailed on the 'Mary' direct from Ireland - 1819 & 1836 - are currently being listed, incomplete data to date.

There were only 15 convicts on the Mary 1836. The ship departed from Calcutta and all of the convicts had been soldiers at Fort William, Bengal. John Kelly was a farm labourer/soldier and was transported for ‘Assault and stealing boots’. Private John Kelly, no. 849 of 38th regiment Arrachpore(??), 30 years old, disgraceful and (?) conduct, 7 years, can neither read or write, single, labourer, 5'6'', ruddy and little pockpitted complexion, dark brown hair, light hazel eyes, tattoos, behaviour in Calcutta gaol good. Native place: Kings County. 15/4/1840: Absconded from John Hector, at Paterson, taking with him a Certificate of Freedom belonging to a man named James Keating on 31/3/1840. 22/4/1840: Apprehended, Paterson. 20/8/1842: Admitted to Newcastle gaol from Maitland on a charge of robbery. Sent for trial – no outcome found. 29/11/1843: COF
