The Castle Forbes was a 439-ton merchant ship built by Robert Gibbon & Sons at Aberdeen, Scotland in 1818. She made two voyages transporting convicts from Ireland to Australia. Castle Forbes arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales on 27 January 1820. After their arrival in Sydney, 136 men were sent on to Van Diemen's Land Colony (now named Tasmania), arriving in Hobart 1 March 1820. 4 men remained in New South Wales and 4 deaths recorded on this voyage. Irish Convict Database, by Peter Mayberry. Gilbert Kelso, age 28, per Castle Forbes (2) 1824, Tried at Carrickfergus Antrim Co., 1823, for Life. DOB, 1796, native of Belfast Antrim Co., Trade: soldier. -------------------------------------------------- Police Report, Windsor, Monday January 29. Gilbert Kelso, had absconded from the service of a hard working man at Hunter's River. The prisoner's master is a stonemason, and performs jobs for divers individuals, such as putting up chimneys, &c. on new farms ; a very useful member at a new settlement ; but Kelso did not like his employment. Kelso had once been a constable at Windsor, and that was somewhat more genteel and lucrative to him. Ordered to be returned via Sydney.
