Convict Notes

Gaol Entrance Book: named Ellen Gravestock Vessel arrived in: Almorah Date of admission 29 June 1829 in Sydney Gaol for Drunkeness 3rd Class One Month 3 July 1829 to Parramatta

The Ellen Kenna jailed for one month in 1829 for being drunk may be another Ellen Kenna, as by this date the "Almorah" Ellen Kenna was married (1825) to Joseph Gravestock, and if it was her presumably would have been charged under her married name. There was another Ellen Kenna who arrived in NSW with her family as a young girl.

Ellen Kenna married Joseph Gravestock on the 4th Jun 1825 in Sydney, NSW. Joseph Gravestock was a cooper, born in Deptford, Kent, the son of Thomas Gravestock a master cooper at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Deptford. He took a working passage to Australia in the early 1820s. There is an Ellen Gravestock who dies in the Kivington? Asylum, Sydney, on the 4th July 1892, of senile decay. Her age is given as 70 years, which does not correspond with other documents. It could well be her however, with her real age being 86 years, and her date of birth not known to the authorities.
