Donald Kennedy was transported on the Royal Admiral, departing 30th May 1792 and arriving 7th Oct 1792 with 349 passengers.
The Royal Admiral was built at Lynn in 1828. Convicts were transported to New South Wales on the Royal Admiral in 1830, 1833, 1835 and to Van Diemen's Land in 1842. 1833 - Ship; Royal Admiral. Commenced fitting as a Convict Transport at Deptford on the 29 March. Surgeon Superintendent [Andrew Henderson] joined on the 3rd April. Guard embarked on the 13th. Sailed on the 17th and anchored in Kingston Barbour near Dublin on the 9th May. 220 convicts embarked on the 16 May 1833 and the ship sailed from Dublin Bay for Sydney on the 4th June and arrived there on the 20 October. Originally embarked with 221 convicts, 5 Died at sea, 1 was Relanded. 11 sick on shore, The convicts were described as 220 such wretchedly debilitated creatures ... Family connections for Donald (Kennedy) are: KENNEDY Donald (Kennedy aka Donald in Rioch), son of Alexander (Kennedy) & Margaret (Campbell), was born evidently on 22 11 1756 at Inverness Scotland. He is said to have married Mary/Ann (Grant) in Inverness? Scotland about 1789. He was tried w/2others of perhaps (MacDonald clan) for stealing a horse at Inverness Court of Justiciary on 23 4 1790, sentenced to Life & a public whipping & arrived in NSW as a convict apparantly with his wife on 7 10 1792 after a voyage of 4months on ROYAL ADMIRAL; he was Catholic. He was Free by Servitude by 1801. He was issued a Pardon & enlisted with the NSW Corps 102nd Regiment as a private on 23 2 1801, was attached to (Patterson)s Company & discharged on 24 3 1803 at Sydney. He was recorded in 1828 as a farmer with his family at Evan. He died on 5/6/9 6 1829 age70/73 & was buried at St Patricks cemetery North Parramatta. She arrived in NSW apparantly with her husband on 7 10 1792 after a voyage of 4months on ROYAL ADMIRAL. She died on 3/5/28 5 1827 age61or55 & was buried at St Patricks cemetery North Parramatta. He was tried for highway robbery, in August 1799 at Manchester-captured in April 1800, of W (Wyatt) at Chester Lancaster Assizes on 14 8 1800, sentenced to death commuted to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 16 12 1810 after a voyage of 5.5months on INDIAN; he was Catholic. The Scots Magazine - Thursday 01 April 1790 p. 47 "The Court was opened at Inverness on Wednesday, April 21, by Lord Henderland - Donald Macdonald alias Donald the Duke, Roderick Macdonald alias Macjames vic Gorry, and Donald Kennedy alias Donald in Rioch, were, upon their own confession, found guilty of stealing a number of horses, and were sentenced to be whipt and transported for life." Tried and convicted of horse theft at the Inverness Court of Justiciary on 23rd April 1790, sentenced to transportation for life, Donald was whipped through the streets of Inverness for his crime and his papers were marked .. 'Never to return'. At some stage he received a full Pardon. He was in the New South Wales Corps (102nd Regiment) and served in the company commanded by Lt Colonel William Patterson. Left England on 30th May 1792. Ship:- the 'Royal Admiral' sailed with 299 male and 49 female convicts on board of which 10 males and 2 females died during the voyage, 1 male convict was reported to have escaped. Arrived on 7th Octber 1792. Donald's wife, Ann accompanied her convict husband aboard the ship 'Roayl Admiral'. She was the granddaughter of William Grant who had fought at the 'Battle of Culloden', on the side of the Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie, before being captured by Ludovic Grant, a kinsman.
