Convict Notes

In the 1825 Muster, there is mention of John: Kennedy, John, free by servitude, Guildford, overseer, Samuel Terry, Illawarra. Then he must have married Matilda ? (details unknown). They are recorded on the Sainty & Johnson record of the 1828 Census: Page 222... [Ref K0554] Kennedy, John, 37, free by servitude, Guildford, 1816, 7 years, Catholic, tenant, Illawarra. [Ref K0555] Kennedy, Matilda, 20, F, Catholic. [Ref K0556] Kennedy, Hugh, 8 months, born in the colony. (# Note various interpretations of Matilda's entry have been made. The F has been translated as FS and therefore it has been stated she was a convict. However, F could also apply to CF, Came Free so it is very unclear.)

John was aged about 21 when his father, Hugh Kennedy (Convict, Three Bees, 1814) was transported for the possession of a forged banknote. There were 3, possibly 4 younger siblings in the family and no record of a mother still alive. The siblings were Mary 1796, Hugh 1804, Richard 1809 and possibly also a William, still younger. It would appear that John's efforts to support the family possibly led him to committing a crime. All the siblings eventually came to the colony in 1821, Free, aboard the "John Bull".
