Born at Middlesex, England to Richard Kentwell & Martha Kentwell (Capper). Baptised in 1765 at St Marylebone, Middlesex. The family lived at St Giles, Cripplegate near Covent Garden. Married Elizabeth Morris 4/1/1796 at Parramatta by Samuel Marsden. William signed the register & Elizabeth made her Mark X. In 1796 William was released from sentence & granted a 60 acre block near where the Pendle Hill Railway Station is now. In the 1800 census William was free & farming 15 clear acres of land at Toongabbie. In the 1806 census William had 75 acres & was assigned a convict, Lawrence Kirwin. He was a member of like minded Emancipists known as the Association of Settlers.

William was tried and convicted in Middlesex in 1788, of stealing 'with force of arms' two linen handkerchiefs valued at two shillings and goods and chattels of 'other persons unknown', sentenced to 7years transportation, he spent the next 3 years on Prison Hulks. Left England on 27th March 1791. Ship:- the 'Admiral Barrington' (3rd Fleet) sailed with 300 male convicts on board of which 36 died during the voyage. Arrived on 16th October 1791, the last of the eleven ships of the Third Fleet to arrive in Sydney. Married convict Elizabeth Morris ('Mary Ann' 1791) on 21st January 1796 at St. John's Church Parramatta, they had 5 children from 1799-1809, Elizabeth had had a relationship with convict Johyn Dalton ('Albermarle' 1791) which resulted in the birth of a daughter, Hannah (1793), John had abandoned Elizabeth & his daughter and sailed on the 'Salamander' which was bound for Norfolk Island & then on to India. In 1805 the settlers of the district elected William as one of the trustees of Prospect Common. The Common was 9,345 acres and used for common pasturing by settlers and those holding leases. By 1806 William had 75 acres and was assigned a convict servant - Lawrence Kirwan. He was now a prosperous small farmer and a member of an association of like-minded emancipists known as the Association of Hawkesbury Settlers. When Governor Bligh arrived in 1806 the Association nailed their colours to the mast and sent the Governor an address of welcome and further letters of support. When the MacArthur forces unseated Bligh and took control of the colony the Association members were at the mercy of the clique of exclusives and members of the NSW Corps. In August 1809 William Kentwell, and seven others, drowned in the Hawkesbury/Nepean River near Windsor during a flood. It seems that he was returning home after purchasing horses for the Government when the accident happened. Elizabeth, now thirty-one, was left with six children, the youngest being just a few months old. Three weeks after she was widowed, on 23rd August 1809, Elizabeth took seven-year-old Charlotte to the Female Orphan Institution. She continued to run the farm with the help of Hannah and the two boys and, a little while later, an Irish convict called Murtagh (Murty) Shields who had a wife and six children at home in Kilkenny. Shields had been tried for horse stealing and was transported for life in 1800, arriving on the 'Anne I' in 1801, (He may have been assigned to the Kentwell's in place of Kirwan.)

William married Elizabeth Morris (Convict; Mary Anne, 1790) on 4 January 1796 at Parramatta, NSW. At this time he would have been aged 35 and Elizabeth was 21. The Muster records of 1805 show the couple with 4 children, although the eldest would have been Hannah Dalton a daughter of Elizabeth's from a prior liason. William was unfortunately drowned in the Nepean River, near Windsor 31 July, 1 August 1809. He was returning home after purchasing horses for the Government when he and 7 others suffered this terrible fate. At this stage he had become a prosperous farmer and had joined the Association of Settlers. Elizabeth continued to run the farm after hsi death with the aid of her elder daughter Hannah and the two boys William and John.
