Register of General Courts Martial Private John Killeen, 44th Regt, at Cawnpore , 28 Sept 1830, Charge: Feloniously stabbing a Drummer of his Regt. Sentenced to be hanged; but commuted by the Com. in Chief in India irregularly – confirmed by His Majesty. Proceedings laid before the King, 21 Jan 1832.




A native of Galway, aged 26 when convicted at Cawnpore, India in 1830. single. He was a soldier in the 44th regiment. The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British India and its ..., Volume 5, page 215. At Cawnpore, Private John Killeen, H.M. 44th regt., was arraigned on the following charges, viz. - “1st. With having, at Cawnpore, on the 20th July 1830, unlawfully and feloniously stabbed, with a bayonet, Michael Burke, drummer, of the same regiment, with intent to murder the said Michael Burke. 2d. Having, at Cawnpore, on the 20th July 1830, unlawfully and feloniously stabbed, with a bayonet, Michael Burke, drummer, of the same regiment, with intent to do him some grievous bodily harm.” The court found the prisoner guilty of both the charges, and sentenced him to be hanged by the neck till dead; but the Commander-in-chief commuted the sentence of death to transportation, as a felon, for life. Absconded Prisoners Killeen John, Caroline, 31-1590, 22, Gallway, stableman, 5 feet 6 1/2, ruddy freckled comp. Brown hair, hazel grey eyes, slight scar along outer part of eyebrow, from J. B.
