COMMITTAL.-A very important instance of the caution necessary to be used by families in employing indiscriminately char or washerwomen, was evidenced in a case which occurred before the Police Court on Wednesday. Francis Kingsbury, and Martha his wife, were brought before the Court under the following circumstances. It appeared that Mr. Frederick J. Brown, of Kissing Point, had lately missed some household articles, as also a large quantity of wearing apparel, from his establishment. Having received information that the female Kingsbury was the purloiner, and that the stolen articles would be found at her residence, a search-warrant was procured, which on being put in force by district constable Bragge, who was accompanied by Mr. Brown, a variety of articles were found, which were identified by the prosecutor as being his property; and so barefaced had been the robbery, and so reckless of detection the thief, that from many of the articles on which Mr. Brown's name was written the mark had not been removed. Of the party effecting the robbery but little doubt could be entertained, the female prisoner having been on several occasions employed by Mrs. Brown in household affairs, and it being immediately after her day or two's work the articles were missed. At the time of the search being made at Kingsbury's house the only person present was himself, but almost immediately afterwards constable Bragge, meeting the female prisoner in the vicinity, and adroitly questioning her to having articles in her possession marked with the name of Brown, she stated some had been given to her by Mrs. Brown, and others by her sister. It is needless to add Bragge at once took her in charge, and on the foregoing facts being deposed to, she was committed for trial. Constable Bragge stating that on the male prisoner being told the object of his visit to his (Kingshury's) residence, that he afforded every facility for the execution of the search warrant, and said, that if such articles as were named in the warrant were in the house he was wholly unaware of it; and John Brown, in addition to confirming the constable's testimony, averring that he had not the slightest reason to suspect that Kingsbury knew anything of the theft committed by his wife, he was discharged. Sydney Morning Herald, 1 May 1847.
