Convict Notes

On arrival in January 1826 he was assigned to "George Druit, Residence: Mt Druitt" (per convict indents, entry no 107). Given his state of debility he couldnt have been much use for physical work. 1828 Census: census district of Parramatta, he was in hospital: Dennis CANARY, Aged: 80 years Religion: Catholic; Ship of arrival: Sir Godfrey Webster 1825; Trial Sentence: 7 years; Current Status: Prisoner of Crown; Employment: Barracks; Householder: Residence: Hospital Patient; 1830 ticket of leave for Parramatta 1832 Certificate of Freedom, number 32/0347; Dated 23 Apr 1832. 1836: Death, burial at Liverpool, see above.

The efforts of the convict ship surgeon to keep old Dennis Kinneary alive on the voyage paid off. He lived another 11 years in Australia, having got his Ticket of Leave for Parramatta in 1830. [Sydney Gazette, 21 Oct 1830, p.2]. Dennis's age was recorded differently in different records: * The ship's surgeon, in 1825, believed hm to have been aged 80. * The convict ship indent recorded his age as 76 - this would be from Dennis's own information to the authorities. * The death certificate in 1836 recorded his age as only 70.

Further to the medical attention paid to Mr Kinneary on the voyage, as referred to above, the surgeon also wrote: FOLIOS 13-14: " ... Particular attention was observed with regard to the diet of these persons and I was obliged early on the voyage to issue some of preserved soup and Bouilli, Indeed the lives of John Cahill, D KENNEARY (80), Simon Flaherty (64) were preserved as well as several others by the timely issue of Bouilli and the concentrated gravy and vegetable soups, here follows their names John Taylor 25, Denis Slattery 42, William Ryan 37, James Foody 34, John asey 29, Thomas Coyle 45, Patrick O'Neil 55, D Kenneary 80, Simon Flaherty 64, B Flaherty 60, Edward Orpen 53, John Daley 40, Thomas Roberts 44 57th regiment, John Keron 32, Patrick Dwyer 28, Michael McDermot 27, E Doyle 30, A Flanagan 43."
