Brickfields Pauper Establishment. DISCHARGED SERVANT. A letter from the Superintendent was read, recommending the discharge of Bernard Kite, night watchman, for insolence and neglect. The Chairman reported that the man had repeated his insolence, and was discharged at the end of the month. The Board approved. The Mercury, 6 Aug 1868.

Jones, Sydney, single. Labourer, age 41, native of Holborn, can read and write, C. of E., arrived 8 Dec 1845. Police History. Per ship Mangles (1) 1820, Tried Middx Gaol delivery, 28 Oct 1818, 7 years. For shoplifting. 25 Sep 1823. Sent to Port Macquarie for the remainder of his sentence being a runaway from Emu Plains. 2 Feb 1833, 18 Col. Months Ironed gang – Larceny, Sydney. Obtained his Cert of Freedom, 19 Dec 1825. Again tried Sydney Q.S. 20 Oct 1835, sentence 3 years to Moreton Bay, returned 25 Oct 1838. Again tried Sydney S. C. 18 Oct 1845, for uttering a forgery- 7 years. To a penal Settlement in V.D. L. He spent 2 years period of labour at Port Arthur. Absconded March 11 1846, sentenced to 12 months hard labour in chains. Sep 22 1846, Absent without leave, - 4 days solitary confinement. March 22 1848. Record of meritorious conduct in extinguishing a fire at Port Arthur. T. of L. 6/11/49. March 27, 51. Larceny under £5, Six months hard labour on the Roads, T.L. revoked. Of W. H. Burgess, Stated this offence. To be imprisoned in the gaol at Hobart Town & kept to H.L. for 12 Cal. Months. Discharged to freedom, 26 Aug 1855. Remarks: For Govt history, vide (see) old records, Bernard Kite per Wanderer No 189. --------------------------------------------------- Bernard Kite, was indicted for having on the 35th of August last, forged and uttered an order for money, with intent to defraud Mr. John Black, of the Bank of N. S. Wales, of the sum of £33. It appeared that the prisoner and another man went to a Lodging House kept by a Mrs. Jones, and having bargained for board and lodging, stayed with her two or three days, depositing with her, the forged order, which purported to be payable at nine days sight, en security for the payment, and subsequently, having contrived to get from her £3 on account, they absconded. The prisoner denied having ever seen Mrs. Jones before, and called two brothers named Coffee, to prove an alibi, but as these witnesses both contradicted each other — the Jury found the prisoner guilty of uttering, knowing the document to be forged. John Kite was later known as Bernard Kite. He was convicted several times and spent time at Moreton Bay Penal Colony, and was transported to VDL, to Port Arthur. Convicted at the Old Bailey (online) GEORGE MATON, JOHN KITE, Theft > grand larceny, 28th October 1818. 2593. GEORGE MATON and JOHN KITE were indicted for stealing, on the 21st of October , twelve yards of printed cotton, value 12s. , the goods of Joseph Hawkins . WILLIAM DRAKEFIELD . I am servant to Joseph Hawkins , who is a linen-draper , and lives in St. John-street . On the 21st of October, between twelve and one o'clock Thompson alarmed me - I saw Metcalf take Maton, and take the printed cotton out of Kite's apron, which was taken from our door. JAMES METCALI. I live opposite to the prosecutor's. I saw Maton take the cotton from the door, and put it in Kite's apron - They had been lurking about the shop for two hours - I secured them both, and took the print out of Kite's apron. (Property produced and sworn to.) KITE'S Defence. I found it at the door. MATON - GUILTY . Aged 16. KITE - GUILTY . Aged 18. Transported for Seven Years .
