National Archives. HO 17/54/741834 Jan 4; 1831 Feb 17 Prisoner name: Edward Knight. Prisoner occupation: Mason. Court and date of trial: Somerset Quarter Sessions, Wells, 4 January 1831. Crime: Stealing a boiler, value 30/- from Stephen Terry of Walcot [Somerset] on 9 November 1830. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character bad, before convicted of felony. Petitioner(s): D Jardine, defending counsel. Grounds for clemency: The indictment was not a true indictment because of a discrepancy in describing the place from which the boiler was stolen. Other papers: Copy indictment (on six counts) against the convict and his accomplice. Letter from Edward Coles of Taunton transmitting the copy indictment to the Home Department. A letter and notes on the case from John Phelips (Chairman of the Bench). Additional Information: Convicted with John Cantle who confessed to the crime.
