ANOTHER CONVICTION: In July 1835, John Knox was convicted for breaking, entering a stealing a shawl and three silk handkerchiefs, along with receiving stolen goods. He was convicted and sentenced to two years' hard labour on the Grass Tree Hill Chain Gang. PARDON: He received a Conditional Pardon on 17 May 1843 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-26$init=CON31-1-26p88).

TRIAL: John Knox, a single labourer aged 20 from Roger's Close, Cowgate, Dundee, was tried on 7 October 1831 at Perth. He was convicted "for the crime of theft, habit and repute at 'Box Henry', Dundee Harbour". His victims were Robert Sutherland and Thomas Smith, both of Cellardyke, Kilrenny, Fife (see National Records of Scotland; Reference AD14/31/62). In his VDL Conduct Record, John described the crime as "receiving a stolen jacket" and said he had been jailed for two previous offences - stealing bottles and stealing wood (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-26$init=CON31-1-26p88).
