National Archives. HO 17/54/231829 Sept 19; 1841 Mar 15 Prisoner name: Joseph Laceter, otherwise Joseph Lester or Joseph Lister or Joseph Leicester. Prisoner age: 29. Prisoner occupation: Collier. Court and date of trial: Lancaster Quarter Sessions at Kirkdale, August 1829. Crime: Breaking into a warehouse and stealing a quantity of twine, the property of James Glover (rope manufacturer) of St Helens, Lancashire. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): James Glover (prosecutor); Joseph Leicester (the convict) with James Glover and 19 inhabitants of St Helens and its environs; John Gatt Smith, convict's employer in Paterson River, New South Wales, with two signatures supporting convict's character. Grounds for clemency: Previous good character; he has left a wife and four young children in distress and destitute; first offence; his conduct in New South Wales has been that of an excellent servant and of good repute. Other papers: Letter from W Ewart MP supporting the petition. Letter from C Standish MP transmitting a petition. Letter from R Brown transmitting the petition. Additional Information: Held on board the York hulk and then transported on the ship Catherine Stewart Forbes arriving in Van Diemen's Land in 1830. A full description of the convict is given.

He was abourt 19 years old and assigned to the Mineral Surveyor on arrival. 4/4/1833: Miner, assigned to Frederick Drennan - Airds. 1837: Age 27, Assigned to John Galt Smith -Paterson. 16/12/1840: TOL Paterson. 18/12/1847: Joseph Laceter a servant of Mr Burgess of Hinton. 18/12/1847: Charge of assault dismissed by the Bench, however TOL recommended to be cancelled as he had been so violent. 2/8/1848: TOL Paterson. 3/2/1850: CP
