The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

—James Lacey, for embezzling divers sums of money, the property of his master, Mr. S. T. Taylor, ... Suffolk Chronicle, 8 April 1815. On Monday  last, the following convicts were conveyed from the Castle to Portsmouth, for transportation, pursuant to their sentences at the last Assizes; viz. John Frazer, Robert Manby, James Lacey, Robert Henry Day, John Rivett, James Jolly, and Jonathan Adams.   Norfolk Chronicle, 6 May 1815.
