Convict Notes

see Lancaster Gazette - Saturday 24 November 1838 'Horrid murder and robbery at Preston'. Julia was convicted along husband James Lacky at the August Assizes at Lancaster Castle. She was 21, he 32. They were lodging house keepers in Preston, taking in navvies working on the railway. The man who was killed was Michael Donohoe the supervisor of a gang of navvies and had been lodging at the Lacky's house. An argument had arisen when Donohoe from County Carlow had accused Julia of falsifying a bill for provisions she had provided for the workers. James Lacky and his brothers objected to this and rounded up a large gang who attacked and killed Donohoe in his house.
