Convict Notes

Hannah Lamb was born about 1794 in Somerset, England (she was born in Somersetshire according to her Certificate of Freedom). She was tried on 11 January 1813 at the Quarter Sessions held in Wells, Somerset, England, for the crime of theft. She was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation. She arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 9 January 1814 on the ship Wanstead. The indent for this ship has the information that she was aged 20 years, and had been employed as a servant. In the 1814 muster she was listed at the Parramatta Female Factory. Hannah Lamb married Richard Mugridge on 7 November 1814 at St John's Church of England, Parramatta, New South Wales. The register recorded that Richard Mugridge was age 44, had arrived per Fortune, and he signed his name "Rich Mugridge"; Hannah Lamb age 22, arrived per Wanstead, and marked the register with an X. They both resided in the parish of St Johns. They were married by Banns by Samuel Marsden, witnesses William Evans and Ann Latham. They had one known child John, born 30 August 1817 and baptised on 19 October 1817 at St John's Church Parramatta by Samuel Marsden who entered the family name as "Mockrage" in the register. In the 1822 muster she was listed as "Free by Servitude", "Wife of Rourke Windsor", with one child. It appears that she left Richard Mugridge for Miles Rourke who was listed in the 1822 muster as having a 15 acre farm at Windsor. In December 1823 she received a copy of her Certificate of Freedom, as her previous one had been damaged. The certificate has the information: she was born in Somersetshire, height 5 feet 4 inches, sallow complexion; brown hair, brown eyes. In September 1825 she received another copy of her Certificate of Freedom. By 1824 she had entered into a de facto relationship with Daniel Barnett. They had one known child Jane, born on 25 April 1824, and baptised four years later on 19 October 1828, registered at St James' Church of England, Pitt Town, the register recording parents' names Daniel Barnett, farmer, and Hannah Lamb, of Pitt Town. In the 1825 muster Daniel Barnett, age 31, was listed as Born in the Colony, Convict; CS (Colonial Sentence) Life; Landholder in the Windsor district, living with Hannah Lamb, (Wanstead 1814) Free by Servitude, and child Jane Lamb, child of Daniel Barnett, also John Lamb age 8, son of Hannah Lamb. In the 1828 census, Hannah Lamb, aged 40(sic) years, Protestant, Wanstead, Free by Servitude, was listed as housekeeper for Daniel Barney(sic), at Pitt Town, with her children John 12, and Jane 3. On 29 November 1828 her husband Daniel Barnett was tried at the Supreme Court Sydney, with Terence Byrne for cattle stealing. Daniel died in March 1830 at Moreton Bay penal settlement On 17 August 1835 Hannah married William Riley in a Presbyterian ceremony at Pitt Town, New South Wales. The register recorded that William Riley was a bachelor, age 32; Hannah Lamb was a spinster(sic), age 40. Both were residents of Windsor. Witnesses were Edward Mitchell and Elizabeth Cleverly, both of North Richmond. They had a child: William Riley, born in 1835. In the 1841 census, the family of three were living at Macquarie Street, Windsor. Hannah Riley died on 22 April 1850 at Windsor. Her burial on 23 April 1850 was registered at St Matthews Church of England, Windsor. The register recorded that she was aged 55 and her residence was Windsor. Her husband William Riley died from heart disease on 10 May 1890 at Long Creek, Mudgee, New South Wales, age 89, occupation shoemaker.
