Convict Notes
William Lander was one of the co-accused in the Despard Plot of 1802, The Plotters were led by Colonel Edward Marcus Despard, a former army officer and colonial official. The prosecutors claimed that the conspirators had planned to assassinate King George III and seize the Bank of England as well as the Tower of London and incite an uprising by the Third Grenadiers stationed at the Tower. Despard and his co-conspirators were arrested at the Oakley Arms pub in Lambeth on 16th November 1802 under suspicion of plotting an uprising. The conspirators were tried for High Treason and were sentenced to death by being Hanged, Drawn & Quartered. Despard together with co-conspirators John Francis, John Wood, James Sedgewick, Thomas Broughton, Arthur Graham, and John Macnamara were executed in Old Horsemonger Lane Gaol in Southwark on Monday, 21st February 1803 before a crowd of 20,000 one of the largest public attendances to that date. William Lander and two other conspirators, Thomas Newman and Daniel Tindall had their death sentences commuted to transportation for life. They arrived in NSW on The Duke Of Portland in 1807.
