Ellen LANE (proper name CALLANAN, prev k/a Reed) was convicted, with Margaret SULLIVAN) at the CCC, London on 26 Nov 1849 for robbery. One previous conviction. 10yr transportation sentence - sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Baretto Junior' arriving 25 July 1850. Aged 22yrs; housemaid; Roman Catholic; single woman; fair complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes. Several tatoos incl name of "Catherine Crawley". Native place of birth: Bermondsey Father: James Mother: Sarah Sisters: Joanna & Margaret Brothers: Charles, James, Daniel & John. (ref. as recorded on Convict Indent) 6mths Probation period upon arrival. To serve 3mths in separate accommodation, Female Factory, Hobart. 1851: allowed to enter private service work. Record of service work and misconduct. 15 Jan 1856: Application for Permission to Marry - John POST (free by servitude) to Ellen LANE (transported per Baretto Junior). Approved. (ref. 52/1/7 & notated on her Convict Conduct Record) (Note: Remarriages were permitted with the Colony, if approved by Govt.) 2 May 1856: Marriage. At St. Luke’s Church of England, Richmond, Tasmania - John POST, full age, labourer to Ellen LANE, full age. (Ref. 37/1/15 no. 848) (St. Luke’s Church still at Richmond in 2017) 10 Aug 1858: Ticket of Leave granted. 13 Jan 1860: Free Certificate issued. 6 April 1870: Death of Ellen, at General Hospital, Hobart.Cause - tuberculosis. Aged 42 yrs, servant. Born London. (ref. 35/1/7 no. 9229) 30 June 1884: John POST died at New Town Pauper Establishment, Hobart. Noted as born England. Aged 79yrs, male, labourer. Cause - Senilis.
