Convict Notes

Fanny Lawless and Bryan Byrne lived together on the Bringelly land of John Wood, who was a well-off settler who'd arrived free in 1818 with his family on ship ‘Maria’, Bryan Byrne worked for him as a tailor – Wood had 12 government servants by 1828. and 4,840 acres, and more land over the Blue Mountains at Lowther near the Cox’s River.

FRANCES LAWLESS was a woman- Frances being the female name (sometimes her name is incorrectly written as the male ‘Francis’. The only other convict from the County of Galway, found guilty in 1790 and then transported, was Jackson Eyre, aged 12, who was tried at Galway City Assizes, and also came on Queen. These were the first two convicts from County Galway transported to NSW. She was colloquially known as 'Fanny'. In August 1806, Frances would be aged about 35 years. On 1806 list prepared by Rev Marsden – she is listed a ‘Concubine” living with Derby “Carbry”, actually CARBERY who arrived on Friendship in 1800, given Life having been tried as a United Irishman. Darby Carbery died in 1810 and was buried on 7 Oct 1810 and is recorded in St Phillip’s (Anglican) church register. He was said to be aged 63 years on his death. If Frances had still been lodging with him, she may have had to find a new place to live. 1811 muster – says, very specifically, she was tried in the Summer Assizes of 1789 (not in 1790), at Galway, 7 Years sentence. 1822 Muster Free by Servitude; Residence: Sydney lodges at R. Harvey. Probably Richard Harvey Arrived per ship General Hewitt,TERM?? (in 1814 he was a convict with Mr John Blaxland, Mustered at, Residence: Parramatta). In 1828 he lived in Pitt Street. September 1825 Muster– Called Fanny “Lawler” Free by Servitude; Housekeeper. Lived at Bringelly with Bryan Byrne. This would be the Bryan Byrne, irish, arriving per Rolla in 1803. In 1828 Bryan Byrne at Bringelly was a tailor. He was tried in 1802 at Dublin when he was aged about 42 (born about 1762) and transported for 7 years on ship “Rolla” arriving 1803. !828 Muster – Frances is not found, she would have been aged aged about 58 years. She is not recorded with Bryan Byrne. Bryan was a tailor, living at Bringelly in the household of John Wood. He was said to be aged 66. He died at the General Hospital in Sydney in February 1830.
