After leaving Australia, for New Zealand, the vessel was set upon by natives from Bay of Islands and most onboard the ship were massacred (including cannibalization). The boat was captured and towed to Motu Wai (Red Island) were it was totally destroyed.

In the colony, at St Philips, Sydney in 1816, Francis married Catherine Kearns. Catherine was the daughter of Matthew Kearns (Second FLeet Convict, 1790, "Neptune") and Ann Farralley (Convict, 1793, "Sugar Cane") and aged about 16 at the time of the marriage. Francis and Catherine had 6 children between 1817 and 1836.
